Editorial

Spring has finally arrived with longer days, birds chirping and new lambs. All these signs of new life and hope can re-invigorate us as we step into the new season. I personally feel the urge to de-clutter, whether it is things from the past, bookshelves and belongings or the sleepy winter mindset, creating space is always a good way to allow new things in. So many ways to shape our own lives in the way we want to live. So, whatever you have planned, here are all things yoga, writing and massage! Have a great spring!

Thought for the month

My work has quite organically moved into areas of loss, remembrance, and memory in recent years. As some of you know, my father died unexpectedly in January of this year. Rather than working as I did after the death of my mother back in 2018, I stopped. I went on a trip around America and the Caribbean, a trip which had been booked for years, which became a way to grieve and visit the continent of my Jamaican father. It felt like a personal reckoning and a celebration of all he loved. I know enough from last time to know that the reality of his death has yet to sink in, but I know having those months away in what was essentially his homelands was a way of taking him back home and back to me. I returned to the funeral we had planned as a family and to the launch of my poetry collection ‘The Ridings’ written about family and of course him. I made the decision, with the help of the book designer to have my parents on the cover as a tribute and as a physical remembrance of their lives.
Each loss, like each love is different, and the yoga journey is about being flexible enough to adapt to this and witness the growth and evolution of our selves. This is what is meant by becoming the witness or the Atman and practising Svadhyaya, or self-enquiry. It is important that the mat practice also becomes the life practice. To practice asana in a vacuum is to miss the point of the yoga journey.

Mentoring for New and/or trainee Yoga Teachers

After ten years as a full-time teacher of yoga I have learned a lot along the way usually by trial, error, and many mistakes! I look back on that new, insecure yoga teacher making her flyers and trying to get her head around how to market her classes and reach the people she wanted to help with fondness. I always think being a yoga teacher is like learning to drive. You can do the training, but you don’t actually learn how to teach until you are out in the real world. Mentoring is something I wish I had access to as a new teacher as starting out can be daunting alone.

Whether it is advice and guidance on classes, lesson plans, teaching accessible yoga, maintaining your own practice, earning a living and how to navigate the many challenges of being a yoga teacher, as an experienced and knowledgeable teacher, I can help!

30 minute or 60 minute sessions via Zoom can be booked directly, contact me for details.

The Ridings Poetry Collection

This collection is now imminent! I have been going through old photographs to aid the designer of the cover who will create the washed-out vintage, nostalgic aesthetic the collection has.
